Our projects allow us to generate carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market. A carbon credit is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide or the equivalent amount of a different greenhouse gas (tCO2e). The concept is internationally recognised as it has become a standard UN tool to finance climate change mitigation.
Nowadays, many companies and countries look at ways to reduce their carbon emissions. It is not always feasible to become carbon neutral relying on current state of the art green technologies. Carbon credits may alternatively be bought to offset emissions and reach sustainability targets. Carbon credits are a scarce and increasingly demanded resource. The higher the price, the stronger the incentive for organisations to invest in their carbon footprint reduction and the higher the means available for offset projects’ socio-environmental impacts.
The efficiency of carbon credits is that they help reduce global carbon emissions at a lower price while supporting more sustainable forms of growth with the generated wealth. Secondary and tertiary investments valorisations get optimized, mostly in Northern countries where most are located. Meanwhile wealth transitions precisely towards there where sustainable development potential is highest and costs lowest. Namely among rural communities of pristine natural habitats where those credits originate from. At CO-Neutral Partners, we chose to partner with strong local actors who invest this money into better infrastructures, schools, agroforestry, sustainable energy production and conservation.
We focus mainly on REDD+ projects. REDD+ is a UN coordinated international initiative to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. The + stands for sustainable management of forests and the conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
It is estimated that between 10 and 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by forest destruction and damage, which equates to more than the entire global transport sector. Therefore, forest protection and restoration must play a central role in the fight against climate change. We cannot avoid dangerous climate change without quickly halting and then reversing forest loss and degradation.
Our projects are certified by VERRA with their Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program, allowing us to put high quality Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) on the market. A VCU represents one metric tonne of greenhouse gas emissions (tCO2e) reduced or removed from the atmosphere.
To achieve a more sustainable impact, we also certify our projects with the VERRA Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) program. This program labels projects that simultaneously address climate change, support local communities and smallholders, and conserve biodiversity.
The Yahuma Sud REDD+ project is a Nature-based project managed by CO-Neutral Partners.
We are currently developing other REDD+ Projects.
